Physical Sensitivities

Although The Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide focuses primarily on emotional sensitivity, all sensitive people also have physical sensitivities to one degree or another. Many of you have written to tell me about your struggles with physical sensitivities. While some of us may only have mildly sensitive skin or a single food allergy, others of us struggle with multiple sensitivities and may suffer uncomfortable physical reactions when taking any substance, such as medications, herbs, or even vitamins.

Understandably, those with significant physical sensitivities have written to me with concern about trying flower essences. In response, here are some guidelines to keep in mind about flower essences. Flower essences can benefit all sensitive people, even the most physically sensitive:

Flower essences do NOT absolutely have to be ingested to have an effect.

Flower essences are energetic remedies, so it makes sense that extremely sensitive individuals may react more strongly than the average person to the flower essence’s energy. Therefore, those who know they are very physically sensitive should begin by using the essence externally, such as putting a few drops of flower essence into their bath water.

Try less than the recommended dosage.

If all seems fine after trying the essence externally, then you may try taking it internally. But begin by putting just one drop of essence in water, one time per day. If you are an extremely sensitive person, this may be all you need to reap the benefits. Adjust the dosage as you see fit, up to the recommended dosage of 2 drops, 4 times per day.

Please keep in mind that these guidelines are only for those extremely physically sensitive folks among us. Most people experience no unwanted physical reactions to flower essences whatsoever, as they are such gentle remedies. Flower essences are energetic remedies. As such, extremely sensitive people may react very strongly to them. Following the guidelines above should eliminate any uncomfortable reactions, and allow you to reap the incredible benefits that flower essences offer.

Meaning, Joy & Silence

Since so many physically sensitive people have written to me, I decided to meditate about physical sensitivity to see if there was any information I need to pass on to you. Following is the result of that meditation, which is a powerful reminder of the importance of meaning, joy & silence for all sensitive people.

Sensitive people are spiritual creatures. I don’t mean this in a religious way. What I mean is that sensitive people hear the call of spirit in everything – in nature, in animals, in rocks, in children, in life itself. But that causes problems when we live in a world that denies spirit.

Our contemporary society says that we are merely physical machines, with no other demonstrable aspects to our being. At best we are told that spirit is in heaven, somehow separate from our earth. This is nonsense. All is spirit; everyone is made of spiritual energy. But when we are told this is not true, it is confusing. Deep within ourselves, in our souls, sensitive people know this is not true. We know that we are spiritual beings and that life should have great meaning and joy.

A sort of self-implosion happens over time for the sensitive individuals in our world. Our inner selves rebel, demanding changes, demanding to be heard, and to be acknowledged. It is not satisfying to live in a cold world bereft of dance, joy and spirit.

This is what the sensitive person truly needs to subsist:

Meaning – The understanding of spiritual energy, and the acceptance of your own powerful place in the scheme of things.

Joy – This means fun, laughter, dance, movement, and an appreciation/connection with the beauty of nature and art.

Silence – This does not mean quiet like the absence of all sound, but the quieting of nonsensical babble. Our world throws noise and garbage at us all the time: radio, tv, billboards, constant muzak, and meaningless chatter. Our minds reflect our world perfectly, chattering all day and all night, often echoing the untruths, misleading opinions, and nonsensical babble that surround us. The silence sensitive people need is the silence of the mind – the silence of garbage, of lies, of useless babble. This can happen by turning off the tv and radio, choosing wisely the people with whom you speak at length, and most importantly, meditating in the solar plexus area, which is an escape from the chatter of the mind.

Physically sensitive people are rebelling, not in the mind, but in the soul. Without meaning, joy and silence, what is there? The inner self fights back, and unfortunately, we humans rarely hear a message unless it is presented physically, e.g. painfully. A great deal of illness is caused by the discrepancy of the needs of the soul vs. the mind’s perceived needs of existing in our world. A compromise is needed – more meaning, joy and silence, while still being a member of society. It’s not as hard as you might think.

We sensitive people have a responsibility to be true to ourselves. This does not mean to avoid participating fully in life. Being true to our TRUE SELF means to persist learning about our inner nature, to know that our presence on this earth makes a difference, and to fully embrace life – the beauty and the ugliness of it. When we bring meaning, joy and silence in as our allies, we can accomplish anything.

Life is for us to live, not to avoid. Make your life what you truly want of it, do what your inner self needs, and your soul will no longer need to rebel.
