ANSWERS TO READERS’ QUESTIONS
I
frequently receive questions via email, and, unfortunately, my schedule
doesn’t allow me to give a personal response to each one. I apologize if you
are one of the questioners to whom I have never responded. (I also receive a
zillion spams a day, so occasionally legitimate emails are deleted.)
In
this and future newsletters, I will answer some of the questions I’ve
received:
Q: Is there a relationship
between sensitivity and allergies?
A: When I researched and wrote The Sensitive
Person’s Survival Guide, I focused on
emotional sensitivity only, as that was my area of expertise as a
psychotherapist. Nonetheless, my clients and readers quickly let me know
that physical sensitivities were an important part of the picture as well.
Most
emotionally sensitive people will have some physical sensitivities as well.
They may be mild, such as sensitive skin and only one or two food allergies.
On the other side of the spectrum, though, are those who are highly
sensitive to any and all chemicals and may suffer from various maladies,
such as numerous allergies, asthma, irritable bowel, etc.
Our
emotions, bodies, minds and spirits are all linked. What we express in one
area, manifests in all aspects. It’s important to realize that the physical
symptoms our bodies express are often a message calling for change. Look to
your emotions and your lifestyle choices to begin to decipher what your body
is pointing out to you.
Q:
Do sensitive people generally exhibit a heightened sense
of fairness or equity?
A: What an interesting question! This is true, as
sensitive people are tapped into human suffering. We tend to be more aware
of injustices, as we link them to the pain they can cause.
Q: Is
empathic ability related to taking on others’ physical symptoms?
A: Yes. In my book I discuss empathic ability as an awareness of emotional
energy, which sometimes manifests as feeling others’ emotions as if they
were your own. But keep in mind my response to the first question above: the
emotions and our bodies are linked. We can’t “feel” something in isolation
from our body’s physical response. Our bodies exhibit emotions through
increased heart rate, headaches, butterflies in the stomach, and on and on
and on. Therefore, you can indeed empathically pick up on someone’s physical
symptoms. The approaches that I discuss in The
Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide including
the use of flower essences, meditation and empathic training will address
your sensitivity to others’ physical symptoms as well as their emotions.
