The Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide:
An Alternative Health Answer to Emotional Sensitivity & Depression

[ Review from Twin Cities Wellness, June 2001 - www.tcwellness.com

Dr. Mesich, a psychologist, writes about experiences in her early practice that were creating inexplicable depression. Through a series of coincidences with patients' stories and her own parallel feelings she came to realize she was absorbing, kind of like osmosis, the feelings and emotions of those she was working with in her practice. Of course, many of those she was working with were troubled and overcome with depression and these feelings were incredibly disturbing to her. To her surprise, very little, if anything, was written about this in conventional psychology books so much of her research came from alternative sources and from her own navigation through the dark waters of depression. Mesich claims that "sensitive" people are empaths who are receptive to the emotions of others whether they like it or not. She believes many are born with a natural ability for empathic communication and that because of our "intellectual" language and culture, empaths are often overlooked, misunderstood, and misdiagnosed. Psychic ability and empathic sensitivity and often depression go hand-in-hand according to Mesich. When reading the book, I experienced insight into my often moody daughter, an extremely sensitive and empathic person from birth, who at age five had developed psychic abilities and was able to see into other-dimensional realities.

This books offers help for sensitive empaths who suffer from depression. She explains that flower essences, used by many natural health practitioners for emotional issues, are highly effective in treating sensitive people. Other techniques for healing include visualization and meditation and her book has several. Mesich says that recognition of "sensitives" in our culture goes a long way toward managing the emotional problems that may come from disenfranchisement of this kind of person.
